Taryn O’Neill and Hannah Bennison capped off successful cross country seasons with their best races of the year at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on Nov 27 in Kingston Ontario. After leading the first part of the 4 km race, Taryn was challenged at the front by the eventual leader, Savanna Jordan of Calgary, AB. After a fall in muddy conditions approximately 1 km from the finish line, Taryn came around the final bend with an uphill climb to the finish line in 4th position. Taryn’s gritty racing style paid off as she accelerated into 3rd place, narrowly missing 2nd by one second to win her first medal at Nationals. In the 6km junior race, Hannah found herself in a tight-packed group of 5 athletes for the majority of the race. Remaining composed and relaxed, Hannah put on the pressure over the last 2 km, and the field began to spread out. As Hannah began to pull away, it became clear that she would successfully defend her 2015 Junior title as she continued to lengthen her lead over the final kilometre. She powered home, relaxed, and composed and punched her ticket to the World Cross Country Championships in Uganda next March. Taryn and Hannah each led strong BC Team athletes to silver medals in both the youth and junior team divisions. Former OAC member, Veronika Fagan, also had a great race with a 12th place finish in the Junior girls, and Chet Goetzen and Sean Bergman also represented OAC/Team BC in the junior boys races.
